Program: Live-in boat
Client: Parasite Foundation
Phase: competition, 2000

Parasite was designed within the framework of the project ‘Parasite – concepts for small-scale interventions for the existing city fabric’. An architectural research into lightweight, individually designed architectural objects as a means to intervene in the existing urban fabric, making explicit use of the existing environment. The idea of a houseboat is particularly appealing because of its ambiguous character: houseboats belong to their particular place on the water and at the same time they are universal.

The design for Parasite is based upon two floating volumes of accommodation and a small boat. These elements may be combined in a variety of ways in reaction to the site and its occupants. Each organisational form inhabits the location uniquely and the resulting spatial distinctions suggest differing relationships between the interior and exterior environment.
