Ibstock Place School refectory is shortlisted for a Wood Award

22.09.2021

Ibstock Place School refectory has been shortlisted at the 2021 Wood Awards, recognising outstanding architecture and design using timber.

The Awards’ elite independent judging panel of professional experts and specialists visit all the shortlisted projects in person, making the Wood Awards as meaningful and rigorous a competition as possible.

The refectory timber roof is an intricate lattice of glue-laminated beams, which rise to three glazed lanterns. The exposed structure resonates with the adjacent mature London plane trees which were retained and preserved through careful foundation design. Within the diamond grid, acoustic absorption is provided behind oak slats, providing a soothing visual and aural hush to the space which can seat up to 500 pupils at any one time. The lanterns deliver daylight deep into the space and support natural ventilation of the halls.

This is the fifth shortlist for this project in this awards season, it has already been shortlisted for the AJ Awards, NLA Awards, Structural Timber Awards and Dezeen Awards.
