John graduated from Edinburgh University in 1997.  Since joining Maccreanor Lavington in 2011 he has been project architect for several large-scale mixed-use planning applications in London.

These include Barrier Park Block A, a 193 dwelling residential courtyard block in Newham, which was completed in 2015; Blackfriars Circus, a 336 apartment residential-led mixed-use urban redevelopment scheme in Southwark which was completed in 2018; and the Civic & Livesey project, the redevelopment of the former North Peckham Civic Centre and adjacent buildings in the Old Kent Road AAP as a mixed-use scheme incorporating 372 apartments, new office and light industrial floorspace and a new church & community centre, which was granted full planning approval in November 2019.

John also led the MLA+ team on the new Donetskaya neighbourhood of over 5,000 apartments adjacent to the Moskva River in the Maryino District in the southeast of Moscow, Russia which is currently under construction.

Previously John worked for Ian Simpson Architects in Manchester on the Beetham Hilton, a 47-storey mixed use hotel and residential development, and the Manchester Museum, a refurbishment of the existing grade 2* listed museum buildings with new-build gallery spaces, both RIBA award-winning projects.
