Old Nichol Street

Old Nichol Street is a quiet secondary street lined with workshops, studio offices and warehouses, set in a sought-after location for living and working. In the nineteenth century the street was part of a Victorian slum – a rabbit warren of streets and passageways, situated just on the border between Shoreditch and Bethnal Green.

Urban Renewal

The character and quality of this building emerged over time as the street and its Shoreditch neighbourhood rapidly grew to become a coveted place to reside.

The design required to reflect the upscaling with a more polished finish to accommodate new apartments rather than the initial raw finishes for open plan artists’ studios.

Building on the Built

A new live-work building was created above basement and ground floor commercial spaces and the renovation of the adjoining warehouse converting it into apartments.

We designed the new and old buildings to be a joined pair: the new piece relating to the old with an ambiguous character and proportions of the facade, and robust industrial detailing.
